When I was seventeen I had started to occupy myself with building knifes, adopted for the practical use as a boyscout. It took me about 6 month (mainly some hours in the weekends) to build my first one, which was a sheath knife (photos will follow in a different episode). Obsessed with working with different materials, such as steel, wood, bones and leather, some months later I had started to build my second.
“Every Man Had A Knife !” :: Anyone who has spent quality time outdoors will vouch for the usefullness of a good knife. Time was when nearly every men carried knifes, and today many people have forgotten the necessity of carrying a knife when outdoors.
These days, after many years, I remind myself of these great times with that special obsession in a DIY building process, and started some researches on the knifes used by Bear Grylls. The Bear Grylls´knifes used on the “Man vs. Wild” show on Discovery Channel are the following: Buck Iceman, Titanium Pro Dive Knife, Wenger Serrated Mountaineer Knife, Gerber Gator Serrater!
Sometimes he uses a one-of-a-kind custom made knife that came about Grylls teamed with knife expert Robert Bayely who made a knife design more to the survivor´s liking. Robert Bayely is known for making excellent custom survival knives. To see his work my old knife obsession flares up, it is an invitation to turn off the computers and use my hands again!
