man-made waves :: Wavegarden
The WaveGarden project was presented in San Sebastian (Spain) in February 2011 via a video presentation, unveiling the artificial wave, which was built right in the middle of the Basque countryside (see the post here).

The Technical Engineer and co.founder of WaveGarden, Josema Odriozola, says that he and his team developed their simulated wave system as a way of providing surfing opportunities for people living a long way from the coast. Further he says:
“…Surfers never think of training but enjoying, and getting in touch with nature!”
“…We are all surfers; the sea and beach were our favorite sporting environments.
We wanted to replicate that in areas without a coastline!”
At the moment, WaveGarden is capable of producing one metre-high waves though by summer 2011 they plan to present an updated version capable of producing waves of 1.6 metres in height.
Here is the link to the video interview.
As you can asume, the waves are real and of good quality, it cannot replace the sea but it is a fascinating alternative.
