For everyone who is outraged and depressed by the wave of greed in the 21st century, there is one name that inspires hope - Yvon Chouinard, the founder and owner of PATAGONIA - the antibusinessman who is a businessman to the bone.

ford-ecoline_fcd-boards.jpg"Surfing and climbing are both useless sports. You get to be conquistadors of the useless. You climb to the summit and there is nothing there. And you could hike to the top from another direction. How you get there is the important part. It's the same with surfing." - Yvon Chouinard

MOUNTAIN OF STORMS was a film made in 1968 featuring YC, Doug Tompkins, and Dick Dorworth which documents a 6 month odyssey that took them from from California to the Patagonia region of South America. This film was the inspiration for 180 South. Included in this clip are the intro and a little soul surfing from Peru.

The breaking wave is an interesting motive - and surfing such a profoundly visual act -, that it´s not surprising that surf art and surf photography has become a powerful, hyper-specialised genre.
Yet the act of heé nalu, or wave sliding, is as organic and expressionistic as it is visual. Capable surf art - and there´s plenty of it - takes our collective vision of surfing to some deep places. To paraphrase Robert Hughes, it has particular address to our spirit.
